Why Specify Rosehill TPV Instead of EPDM

EPDM is the default in many wet-pour specifications, but it is not the only option, and in hot, high-UV climates it is often not the best one. Rosehill TPV is a thermoplastic vulcanisate granule, a different compound with a different performance profile.

Colour that lasts.

In accelerated UV testing, Rosehill TPV scored Greyscale 5, against 3 to 4 for premium EU EPDM.

Non-porous.

Water does not penetrate the granule, which helps protect the binder bond.

No premium binder needed to hold colour.

The guide explains how this affects installed cost.

Consistent elasticity.

Impact-absorbing properties are designed to remain stable over the life of the surface.

UV Stability You Can Verify

Colour retention is often described, rarely evidenced. The guide sets out the test method, the exposure level and the results, so the claim can be checked rather than taken on trust.

After 9600 kJ of UVA exposure, Rosehill TPV recorded a change of Grade 1 or less, tested to EN 14836 and assessed to EN 20105-A02. Against a premium EU EPDM, it scored Greyscale 5 compared with 3 to 4.

Whole-Life Performance

A lower purchase price does not always mean a lower cost. The guide includes a 10-year cost comparison on a 100 m² area, looking at installation, maintenance and replacement. According to the guide, specifying Rosehill TPV can reduce whole-life cost by up to 20%.

For asset owners and consultants, that gives a clear basis for comparing options beyond the initial quotation.

Case Study

Real-World Proof: Tsuen Wan Plaza, Hong Kong

At Tsuen Wan Plaza in Hong Kong, an EPDM surface installed in 2021 was replaced with Rosehill TPV in 2022. The guide documents the case, including what prompted the change and how the two materials compared in the same conditions.

It is a practical example of why the material choice matters in a busy, high-exposure public setting.

21 Colours

Rosehill TPV is available in 21 granule colours, each with its own RH code. Colours can be blended to create custom palettes, patterns and branded designs, and because the granules are UV stable, the design specified on day one is the design that stays visible. The full colour range is included in the guide.

Specification Clause

The guide includes ready-to-use specification wording, classified under Q26 Special Surfacing / Play Surfacing, so it can be dropped straight into a tender document.

Sample Specification Clause
Rosehill TPV® granules shall be a thermoplastic vulcanisate with a density of 1.55 ± 0.05 g/cm³ (BS ISO 2781) and a hardness of 70 ± 5 Shore A (BS ISO 7619-1), with elongation at break of not less than 400% (BS ISO 37), bound with a moisture-curing polyurethane binder to achieve a composite tensile strength of not less than 0.70 MPa (EN 12230:2003). UV resistance shall be Grade 1 or better after 9600 kJ UVA exposure (EN 14836 / EN 20105-A02).

Proven Across Climates

Rosehill TPV has been installed in Chile, the UK, New Zealand, Hong Kong, the UAE and at Disneyland California. From sustained Gulf heat to cooler, wetter conditions, the compound is built to perform across them, with a thermal range of minus 40°C to plus 70°C.
